Orange Sophomore Alexis Nyborg captured her first Sectional Championship last week. On Saturday she added her first District Championship to her resume as well. Nyborg did it the hard way with back to back three set wins over Rocky River Sectional Champion Ellie Brotherton of Laurel 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3 and standout freshman Summer Mu of Hathaway Brown 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
In the third set of the final against Mu, a sizable socially distanced crowd bore witness to a relentless show of offensive tennis by Nyborg. Playing primarily from well inside the baseline, Nyborg delivered one bruising ground stroke after another. In the early part of the match Mu had been effective running and counter punching, but in the final frame that strategy broke down as Nyborg’s power game only got stronger.
With the win Nyborg receives the coveted top Northeast Ohio seed at the state tournament (Friday and Saturday in Cincinnati), where the draw is packed with elite talent, most notably blue chip Ohio State signee and defending champion Sydni Ratliff of Columbus Academy.
