Last season the Varsity Football team played to a 3-7 record that saw a team really grinding it out against talented teams from the area. Having lost a large number of seniors, this year’s team will look to establish their own identity as a program.
This Fall, Coach Bechlem has high expectations for a team that had a large senior class last year. The new core group of talented players this season provides the team with a fresh look with many new faces in the starting lineups and a sense of energy for the upcoming season. With fewer practices and games available this year the expectation is 100% effort every day, hard work from every player in order to improve every day. Coach Bechlem states, “We want our players to become the best versions of themselves. It is something we talk about a lot. Upholding our core values of having a great attitude, giving a great effort, being aggressive and controlling the response to the situation they find themselves in.” With just four games on the schedule this fall, players and coaches agree that it is imperative to start fast, play with confidence and carry any momentum they can find through the shortened season for best results.
The strong senior corp is looking for the offense to shake things up in order to provide some cushion and allow their defense to work with a little less pressure than what they were under last season. Senior QB, Zak Basharat, stated his desire to move the ball quickly, “Being under center this year, it is a lot more misdirection relying on quick passing here and steady running there to push us down the field.” The defense has a new scheme that Senior MLB, Sam Adler states, “Will provide all of our extremely dedicated players with the opportunity to showcase their defensive ability.”
Some players to keep an eye on who are expected to be key factors in games this fall include several seniors: Greg Beard, Steven Fellinger, Jake Askari, Sam Adler, Tariq Taylor, Sergio Johnson, Zak Basharat, Tyler Hoffman, Devin Culliver. These are all guys who the team is looking to expand their roles this season as senior leaders. As Coach Bechlem points out they have done a great job of stepping in and taking ownership of the team and giving the team an identity.
